Bright and early Sept. 27, college kids from all over greater Philadelphia were getting ready for the Campus Philly College Fest events. Arcadia provided round trip train tickets to students, and many First Year Seminar courses offered to help get students downtown to the museums and the festivities epicenter in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
The day was bright and beautiful and the walk from the station down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway was one many students found particularly memorable. Along with the Campus Philly event, a cultural fair was underway a few blocks away, and students enjoyed shopping around the markets set up with booths full of jewelry, food and more.
Booths were set up all along the front steps of the Art Museum, including stands from the United States Marine Corp and Genocity.org. Students even had the chance to take selfies with some friendly zombies visiting from the Eastern State Penitentiary for a chance to win free tickets to Terror Behind the Walls. Along with signing up for newsletters to local organizations, students enjoyed some music and participated in giveaways.
For many, the highlight was free entrance to many of the city’s historic museums, most notably the Philadelphia Museum of Art. As students walked through and took pictures, making sure to keep backpacks to their sides to avoid accidentally bumping or scratching any of the masterpieces, there was a general silence or low murmur of admiration, appreciation and criticism, perusing the winding and seemingly endless halls.
Arcadia student Ryan Mills described the day as “a wonderful reminder that [Philadelphia] is a major center for rich culture, diverse outings and beautiful scenery.”
As students left from the exhausting and exciting day, the Rocky Statue had never seen more press as students and tourists alike lined up to get snapshots in the wonderfully cliché pose.
One thing was for certain: Campus Philly knows how to throw a good party. Students can get in on more action by visiting the organization’s website or following them on social media for updates on upcoming events.
